Charly Boy speaks on Rubbin Minds about sexuality, sense of style and more “Because if I don’t do that you would soon forget me. And I intend not to be forgotten.” When asked why he involved in unconventional activities to remain relevant, he responded saying: “I don’t look at them as unconventional. For me it’s a very normal thing. But because I understand your mindset…okay take for instance my rings, they are just rings to me, but a lot of people will read meanings into it. And because I understand that there are people out there who don’t have that kind of depth, and can’t see Charly Boy past the rings and all the shenanigans, they can have that. That’s me as an entertainer.” In response to his sexuality especially considering his antecedents, he said: “It’s for you, I just paint all those pictures. You take what you want to take. But are you in doubt? Is it a point blank question you wanna ask me? “[I do these things] because people are busy eating it up, people are busy making it like a centre piece conversation. It comes with the territory.” When asked if he enjoys the attention on him and his family from the media and critics, he said: “I love that. I create all these imageries. Everybody likes attention. I’m just attention walking on the streets. People are curious about the brand. And if you judge from where I’m coming from, I’ve been around for long, going to almost four decades and I’m still here. “A lot of my contemporaries, people I started with have fizzled out but I’m still here. I’ve refused to go under. I think that’s fascinating enough. And for an entertainer staying in a particular relationship, nobody is hearing about me with ladies and all of that. How many people know that I don’t drink, I don’t smoke? My lifestyle is quite different [from that] of your average entertainer.” He also credited his father for instilling discipline and fundamental values in him at an early age. Charles Chukwuemeka ‘Charly Boy’ Oputa is a 64-year-old Nigerian entertainer and TV host, known for being one of the few entertainers, if not the only one, who promoted the eighties punk movement in Nigeria.
