CNPP says receiving double income as a lawmaker is not good for the country – The group urged lawmakers receiving double income to show concern about the country’s situation. – 21 former governors are currently receiving pensions and salaries as senators The Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) has described Senator Bukola Saraki and other government officials receiving double pay as wicked and insensitive to the country’s current financial situation. The Senate president is one of 21 former governors and deputy government who are now members of the 8th Assembly and are receiving pensions as former
governors and salaries as senators. READ ALSO: Osun state governor inflated airport price by N11 billion The senators who once served as governors are Bukola Saraki of Kwara, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso of Kano, Kabiru Gaya of Kano, Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom, Theodore Orji of Abia, Abdullahi Adamu of Nasarawa, Sam Egwu of Ebonyi, Shaaba Lafiagi of Kwara, Joshua Dariye of Plateau Jonah Jang of Plateau, Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko of Sokoto, Ahmed Sani Yarima of Zamfara, Danjuma Goje of Gombe, Bukar Abba Ibrahim of Yobe, Adamu Aliero of Kebbi, George Akume of Benue and Isiaka Adeleke of Osun. Former deputy governors in the Senate are Ms Biodun Olujimi of Ekiti and Enyinaya Harcourt Abaribe of Abia. Danladi Abubakar Sani served as the acting governor of Taraba state. Some former governors who are now ministers are also receiving a double income. They include Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers, Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti, Chris Ngige of Anambra and Babatunde Fashola of Lagos. Leadership reports that in a statement signed by Alhaji Balarabe Musa and Chief Willy Ezugwu who are the chairman and secretary general respectively of CNPP, they accused the lawmakers who were receiving double income as being unaffected by the country’s problem. The statement read: “The umbrella body of Nigerian political parties in the statement, called on well-meaning Nigerians, the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and their affiliates as well as the civil society to strongly condemn the double pay for the ex-office holders. “We are dismayed that at a time when an average Nigerian can hardly afford a meal a day with their families, former governors and their deputies, now legislators or ministers get double pay from both their states and the federal government. READ ALSO: Confusion hits Goodluck Jonathan’s camp over N3.1b Fraud “They may argue that there is nothing legally restraining them from double earning from the public purse since the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) Act has not prohibited the former governors or the ex-deputy governors from dual remuneration but the double pay goes a long way to prove that they are wicked and insensitive to the current national realities. “There is moral burden on these former officeholders to show that they are in the same country, feel the pains of Nigerians and return the largesse from their respective states.”
